Certification
Many terms leading to confusion
Terms like bio-degradable, degradable, biobased, compostable, biomass and bioplastics are often used today which can be confusing. So what do these terms mean?-
Biomass
Biomass is material made of renewable organic sources and is therefore fully biodegradable. -
Bio-degradable
Bio-degradable plastics are plastics that will decompose naturally into water, CO2 and biomass. However, this does not say anything about how long they take to decompose, which can sometimes be just as long as fossil-fuel based plastics and may or may not leave traces of toxic material. -
Biobased and bioplastics
Biobased and bioplastics are plastics that are made of, or partially made of, biomass. This does not mean they are biodegradable and they can still contain fossil-fuel derived plastic. -
Degradable
Degradable plastics will decompose, but not into biomass, meaning they can leave toxic plastic particles in the environment. -
Compostable
Compostable plastics are plastics that will fully decompose into water, CO2 and natural biomass that will not harm the environment. The resulting biomass, compost, can be beneficial to the environment, helping to improve and fertilize the soil.
European Norm EN 13432
European Norm or European Standard are standards put in place by the European Union, to be implemented at national level by it's member states. EN 13432 in particular is a standard that defines the compostablility of compostable plastic. All material that complies with this standard must also comply with European Directive 94/62/EC. To comply with this norm, the compostable material has to be tested and pass the following criteria:- When mixed with organic waste (GFT) in a composting environment it must decompose within 12 weeks.
- The material must biodegrade within 6 months.
- It can not have a negative effect on the composting process.
- No harmful/toxic material is allowed to be present after decomposing.
- Whatever is left after decomposing can not have an adverse effect on the compost.
TÜV Austria OK Compost EN 13432:2002 Certification
TÜV, Technischer Überwachungsverein or Technical Inspection Association in English, are German and Austrian businesses that provide inspection and product certification. All our products are TÜV OK Compost EN 13432:2002 certified, a sample of each product has been tested by TÜV Austria and found to comply with all the criteria set forth in the EN 13432 standard. Meaning you can trust that our products will decompose fully into all natural non-harmful non-toxic natural components.
